Event Details

Everyone loves good food and drink. Therefore, it's no surprise that food and beverage are the hottest components of the visitor experience right now. Everyone is talking about food/wine/beer tours, food/drink events, and so on. What do you need to know to take your business to the next level? Which businesses and destinations are doing things right? That's where the Online Food Travel Summit can help. The Association held its first online summit in 2015, with great success. We welcome our industry back for another great online event in 2018.

THE PROBLEM: TIME AND COST

Figuring out how to take advantage of, or optimize, your participation in food and beverage tourism is not always easy. And traveling to an international conference can cost you thousands ($/€/£) that smaller businesses simply don't have. Not to mention that traveling to an international conference can take a full week out of your schedule. Professionals today cannot spent the money or time on this luxury.

THE SOLUTION: WE COME TO YOU

All Online Food Travel Summit sessions are held live and online, so anyone anywhere in the world is welcome to attend. Your major benefit is that you save 100% of travel costs. The program features several speakers who are subject matter experts in different areas, sharing their expertise over two days. Speakers focus on case studies, best practices, how to's, etc., and always on subjects that relate to food and beverage tourism. You choose which sessions you want to attend and only pay for those, nothing more. You're invited to attend live or you can listen to the recording later (recordings are not posted publicly; all paid registrations include a link to view the recording later). Registration cost is extremely low, with substantial package discounts available.

Session 1: Peering Into the Food Tourism Future
Speaker: Erik Wolf, Executive Director, World Food Travel Association, Portland, Oregon, USA

Food tourism industry founder and World Food Travel Association Executive Director Erik Wolf leads this lively session. What can business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, strategists and destinations expect to see in food and beverage tourism over the next 12 months? Some of the Online Food Travel Summit's sessions give a peek into our industry's pressing issues, but there are still plenty of other topics that we need to take into consideration as we develop and promote food and beverage products and experiences. Read more on the tab for Session 1.

Session 2: Promoting Food Tourism in a Time of Economic Austerity: The Case of Greece
Speakers: Maria Athanasopoulou, Co-Owner, Top Tourism; and
Xeni Gerna, Principal, Institution of Vocational Tourism Training, Hellenic Ministry of Tourism, Thessaloniki, Greece

Greece is one of the world's favorite tourism destinations. Yet in recent years, the country has experienced economic hardships not normally experienced in a developed economy. Economists know that tourism is an excellent way to bring a fresh infusion of cash to a destination. Therefore increasing tourism would seem to be an important part of the solution to Greece's economic crisis. Yes and no. Read more on the tab for Session 2.

Session 3: Managing Food Traveler Expectations in "Overtouristed" Destinations
Speaker: Danny Adler, Principal, Adler & Marlow, Barcelona, Spain

The issue of "Overtourism" officially came to light in 2013 with the publication of "Overbooked: The Exploding Business of Travel and Tourism" by Elizabeth Becker. Managing a travel agency/tour operator in Barcelona, Danny has been in a unique position to witness first-hand the deluge of visitors to one of the world's most "overtouristed" destinations that Becker discusses in her book. As an on-the-ground practitioner, Danny is in a unique position to present workable solutions. Read more on the tab for Session 3.

Session 4: Influencers & Your Digital Strategy: What You Need to Know
Speaker: Veruska Anconitano, award-winning freelance food and travel writer, Dublin, Ireland

Perhaps more than any previous marketing approaches, digital marketing has held the greatest promise and is delivering the greatest results, for food and drink destinations and entrepreneurs. The right digital strategy can help to put destinations and individual businesses in front of a large audience. Yet many of us are unsure how to begin with a digital strategy - who, where and when to invest our time and money? Which are the best bloggers, instagrammers and youtubers to help you by communicating your values, your brand and the area you represent? Read more on the tab for Session 4.

Session 5: Let's Get Digital — Maximizing Your Message in the Millennial Age
Speakers: Kuvy Ax, Owner, ROOT PR, Boulder, Colorado, USA, and
Alexandra Palmerton, Owner, The 5th Sense, Denver, Colorado, USA

With millennials officially comprising the largest (and still growing) sector of food and beverage tourism, now it's more important than ever to speak their language. So if we know WHO we need to be talking to, all that we need to do now is to discover the HOW, WHEN, WHAT and WHERE, right? It sounds complicated, but it doesn't have to be. In this session, we'll dive into how to refine your messaging and target it to this emerging, growing group of potential customers. We'll cover media relations, social media, how to refine your online presence and much, much more. Let's get digital. Read more on the tab for Session 5.

Session 6: Creating a Food Tourism Experience that Visitor Will Buy
Speaker: Luisa Puppo, Manager, Ligucibario and Manager, LiguriabyLuisa blog

The economic potential of experiential tourism for the further development of gourmet travel is significant. It's about being able to provide interactive food experiences which puts guests at the centre of a well-designed plot. That includes highlighting both the USP (unique selling proposition) of the offer. Luisa Puppo will discuss how she planned successful experiential tourism itineraries and initiatives based on gastronomy.  Read more on the tab for Session 6.

Session 7: From Dream to Profitable Business: How to Make Your Food Tourism Idea Work
Speaker: Midgi Moore, Owner, Juneau Food Tours

Creating a food-/drink-/hospitality-related business isn't all about the food or drink. It's about being able to execute well on a plan. That includes building relationships, using the right tools, and knowing when to say no. Read more on the tab for Session 7.

Session 8: It's the People Who Hold It Together: Ireland's Food Champion Program
Speaker: Sinead Hennessy, Food Tourism Officer, Fáilte Ireland

It takes more than natural beauty, fantastic agricultural products and even a food tourism strategy. A successful food-lovers' destination takes fantastic people too. As Ireland’s contemporary food scene has emerged in recent years, characters have emerged also, at a grass roots level, championing that scene. Read more on the tab for Session 8.

Session 9: Summit Wrap-Up
